Fuel efficiency and CO2 reduction pumpset modification program, Northern India

Atmosfair Germany – Center for the Development of Human Initiatives, Jalpaigui India  |  2008

In cooperation with Atmosfair, PRACTICA has re-developed an existing plan to introduce a large scale irrigation pumpset fuel efficiency program in North India: By installing a €5 modification kit on the most common 5hp diesel pumpsets, a farmer can save an average of 35% fuel when operating the pumpset. Reduction in fuel consumption is realized by reducing the engine RPM, increasing engine operating temperature and removing restrictions on the suction side of the pump by replacing the priming pump and check valve.
By linking the fuel efficiency program to a CO2 reduction program, additional income can be generated that can cover the costs of the large scale promotion needed to convince farmers to join. In 2008, a field visit has been done to evaluate the current situation in the field and to check the assumptions of improving fuel efficiency. Based on the data collected during the visit, a plan will be developed to start a pilot program in 2009.
