Feasibility study rope pumps Northern Uganda

Feasibility study rope pumps Northern Uganda

ZOA Uganda  |  2008

As the violent conflict in Northern Uganda seems to settle, more and more internally displaced people (IDP’s) are now returning to their homesteads. With the focus of provision of safe drinking water being on the refugee camps with community systems, now also the problem of safe water for small communities and households has to be solved. In this context, the option of introduction of rope pumps as a (extended) family drinking water pump has been evaluated. Although local production seems feasible and organizations are willing to support the rope pump, household level access to safe (ground) water needs to build on pre-existing initiatives of self supply, which are almost non-existent in Northern Uganda. Options to start a pilot with rope pumps in this area to better evaluate the opportunities for household level access to safe drinking water are still being considered.
