Feasibility study on manual drilling

Assess the feasibility of manual drilling for irrigation

Country: Ethiopia
IDE  |  2008

Within the framework of the IDE RPI project PRACTICA has assessed the feasibility of affordable manual well drilling for irrigation in the IDE project area ‘Ziway’ in central Ethiopia. This was done by;
Evaluating an inventory of existing manual drilling enterprises,
Determination of the water quality/quantity parameters,
Evaluation of the available hydro-geological data,
Assessing the feasibility of manual drilling related to the hydro-geology in the project area,
Evaluating the best choice of technology for manual drilling in the particular area.
During the mission several wells have been drilled to verify the available hydro-geological data. It can be concluded that manual drilling will be (technically) possible in 30-40% of the project area. In 2009 IDE will further study the affordability of the wells for small scale farmers and assess the market potential for small manual drilling enterprises in the feasible areas.
