Animal traction deepwell pump pilot in Ethiopia

To evaluate the potential for animal powered pumping in Ethiopia, a design for an animal traction deepwell pump was made and a prototype pump was built at the Ethiopian Water Technology Centre (EWTEC) in Addis Ababa. The prototype pump was installed in a rural setting in Butajira and tested. After installation of the pump, monitoring and follow-up has been done by EWTEC. First results show enthusiasm among pump users. For large scale introduction of animal powered pumping in Ethiopia, an extensive evaluation of both social (user) aspects as well as the technical design needs to be done.
